Shalimar Plaza attack

LExperts may be called to reconstruct bomber’s face

By Aamir Yasin

RAWALPINDI: The investigators probing Shalimar Plaza attack are likely to seek help from experts to reconstruct face of the unidentified suicide bomber who blew himself up outside National Bank of Pakistan (NBP).

Police sources told Daily Times on Tuesday that the suicide attack occurred in the limits of Civil Lines Police Station and a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) had formally launched investigation into the attack, adding first information report (FIR) of the incident had been sealed.

They said the FIR had been lodged against unidentified suicide bomber under anti-terrorism and explosive acts. According to the FIR, they said, a suicide bomber blew himself outside NBP Shalimar Plaza Branch, killing 36 people including two women and four army personnel and injuring several others.

They said the investigators had collected suspected suicide bomber’s head, jaw and other body parts from the crime scene and dispatched them to Forensic Lab for DNA test. They said the head was so badly damaged that they needed experts help reconstruct it.

They said the experts would also help reconstruct face of the attacker. They said investigators had also collected ball bearings, pieces of broken glass and sharp iron from the crime scene. All evidence gathered from crime scene had been sent to Forensic Lab of Sihala Police College for examination.

They said the experts were also trying to clear images of the scene recorded on CCTV cameras. They said the police had taken into custody all damaged vehicles including two cabs, private and government vehicles and motorcycles.

They said experts had preserved the crime scene through photographs and drafts. Pieces of the motorbike used in the attack had been dispatched to Forensic Lab for examination, they added.

They said the mobile phone calls made in and around the crime scene were also being decoded and a report on them would be finalised today (Wednesday).

They said the JIT had collected enough evidence and it had started recording statements of witnesses. They said the team would visit CMH and MH to record statements of the injured if their condition was stable.
